Film crews love our street. Fosetter, our ginseng and dried-goods shop at 78 Rue De La Gauchetière Ouest in Montreal's Chinatown, has had more than one knock on the door from a production.
A letter, and an old-looking storefront
This September a letter arrived at the shop from the locations team of a film called Arsenal. They were planning to shoot in the neighbourhood between September 8 and October 10, and asked us to get in touch. For the shoot, our storefront was dressed up to look older, red awning and all.
When we talked about it in the shop, our dog Money got a mention too.
"Its name is Money. It's an internet-famous dog. It's a landmark."
The time Karate Kid asked
That reminded Carmen of an earlier story.
"This is a side story. There was a Karate Kid one, the Jackie Chan one. They said they wanted to borrow our shop, our space, to film a movie. I said I can't lend it to you. Then they said it would be paid. I said I still won't give it to you."
Her reason was the stock on the shelves.
"Because anything you pick up in here is worth quite a bit. If even one thing got broken, it would really hurt. The bird's nest, the cordyceps, one box of this isn't small money, right?"
We still have the email from that production. It came from the locations department for a Karate Kid film starring Jackie Chan, which was about to shoot in Montreal. They were looking for a small Chinese shop for one scene, offered a few thousand dollars toward the rental, and said they would need the space for at least three days, with the shop closed during filming. The film came out as Karate Kid: Legends, shot in Montreal in the spring of 2024, Chinatown included. It was filmed without our shelves.
The real landmark
Crews keep coming back to this street. As far as we're concerned, the landmark has been open at number 78 the whole time. If you want to see the boxes Carmen wouldn't risk, our bird's nest collection is a good place to start.
No film crew needed. Come by 78 Rue De La Gauchetière Ouest and say hi to Money.
